At the Reading and Northern Railroad, we provide excellent sales, marketing, and customer support for our current and prospective customers throughout the nine counties we serve in Pennsylvania. We are also proud to be nationally recognized for our accomplishments in attracting new customers and new business to our railroad.

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) awarded the Reading and Northern Railroad their “Short Line Marketing Award” in 2020 for the fifth time since 2010! In addition, the Reading and Northern was recognized as the Regional Railroad of the Year by Railway Age Magazine again in 2020, the only four-time winner of this prestigious award.

These awards are presented in recognition of our strong and effective development efforts in attracting new business and new customers to the Reading and Northern Railroad. We can assist with Industrial Development site searches as well as rail infrastructure design and construction planning. We serve or access numerous industrial parks with available site locations for development. See our list of available Industrial Development Sites under the “Business Development” section of the web site.

Reading and Northern also owns and operates transloading and warehouse operations in West Cressona, Penobscot, Ransom and West Hazleton, PA. We can provide rail car loading/unloading, storage space for material both inside and outside as well as local trucking in our privately owned truck fleet.  See our list of transloading services under the “Business Development” section of the web site.

Our railroad is 400 miles long and we handle freight to and from all points in North America as well as imports and exports around the world. We connect to Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific, both Class I railroads. While still known as “The Road of Anthracite” for our historic roots in the anthracite coal region we have a broad and diverse traffic base. Primary materials handled by RBMN include Anthracite Coal, Forest Products such as Pulp, Paper and Wood, Plastics, Food, Beverages, Agriculture Products, Chemicals, Minerals, and Metals.

We own and maintain over 1400 rail cars and 67 locomotives. Our car shop and engine house are on site at Port Clinton for most routine maintenance needs and our certified weigh in motion scale is available to update car records with accurate weights. We recently added a new building to house a wheel truing machine. Our Customer Service department is modern and equipped with state-of-the-art systems for managing inbound and outbound car movements.

In 2022 we purchased an office and shop campus in Nesquehoning with multiple buildings that will be rail served.  The layout is currently being designed for best use.

We are positioned well to continue taking good care of our customers to help them be successful and working aggressively to help new customers locate on the Reading and Northern to take advantage of the many benefits of being located on the RBMN, such as:

  • Scheduled Railroad – Every customer has a scheduled delivery window of two hours which we meet 98% on time.

  • Two Class I Connections – We connect to both Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific railroads.

  • Extra Daily Switching Availability – We can often accommodate extra switches when needed.

  • Capacity on Trains – We have room to grow.

  • Storage Tracks – We have the capacity and experience to handle storage of both loaded and empty rail cars.
